Weapons are the great equalizer. Any restriction on self-defense tools — from pepper spray to pistols — puts women, particularly smaller, older, and physically weaker individuals, at risk. These tools level the playing field, giving women a fighting chance against stronger, larger attackers.
Did you know that 80% of crimes committed against women are perpetrated by men? And every law restricting access to weapons is essentially putting women in danger.
Let’s address a common concern: “But they could take the weapon from you.” Here’s the truth: with the right weapon, training, and mindset, NO ONE will take it from you.
Take a simple push dagger or neck knife, for example. In a grappling situation, this tool allows a woman to defend herself, even in close quarters. Its design ensures a secure grip, even when slippery, and with just a bit of practice, she can be ready to defend herself and turn the tables on an attacker.
Here’s the reality: women are, on average, physically smaller and less aggressive than men. Even the most skilled female fighter faces a daunting challenge when going up against a male attacker. Take an average-sized man (5’7” and 200 lbs) vs. an average woman (5’4” and 170 lbs), and the man has a clear advantage nearly every time.
But what happens when that man is a career criminal, or a sociopath with violent intent? Now the odds are stacked even higher.
It takes years of dedicated training for a woman to stand a chance in a full-on assault. It’s not as simple as a self-defense seminar or a few moves from the dojo.
But when a woman is armed? She stands a much better chance of surviving — even winning — against someone larger, stronger, and with malicious intent. More weapons = more chances of survival.
So why are we restricting women’s ability to carry and conceal firearms, carry edged weapons, or even have pepper spray? Every law that limits their ability to defend themselves puts them at greater risk. Shouldn’t women’s rights groups and lawmakers be paying attention to this?
